Introducing the "Free" Job Type in Everest

Announcement
Improvement

Not every piece of work is tied directly to revenue — but it still matters.

To help teams track effort more accurately, we've introduced a new Job Type: Free.

When should you use it?

Use Free jobs for work such as:

  • Post-live support
  • Internal initiatives and projects
  • Pre-sales activities
  • Research and discovery work
  • Any other non-billable effort

Why this matters

Previously, teams often had to work around billability settings to log this type of work.

With the new Free job type, you can now accurately capture team effort and capacity while ensuring that these hours:

  • Do not impact revenue calculations
  • Do not affect project margins
  • Do not contribute to billability metrics
  • Remain visible for planning and utilization purposes

This gives us a clearer picture of where time is being invested across the organization.

Job Form Simplification

As part of this update, we've removed the "Is Billable Required" field from the Job form.

The distinction is now much simpler:

  • Billable → Work tied to client delivery and revenue
  • Free → Non-billable work that still deserves to be tracked

No extra flags. No ambiguity. Just choose the appropriate job type and start logging.

Better Visibility, Better Planning

The new Free job type helps us understand the complete picture of team effort — not just revenue-generating work, but also the support, innovation, and operational activities that keep everything moving forward.
